A coastline of remarkable interest, but threatened
The coastal part of the Marais Poitevin, the Aiguillon Bay, classified as a National Nature Reserve, is a vast natural complex composed of remarkable habitats. It is home to an exceptional biodiversity. However, this natural environment is subject to significant pressure related to human activity (coastal development, agriculture, oyster farming, tourism…). This area between land and sea is also confronted with sedimentary deposits and influenced by tides and storms.
The Aiguillon Bay mudflats
A joint project to protect and conserve coastal habitats
It is in this context that the Marais Poitevin Natural Regional Park, the managers of the Aiguillon Bay National Nature Reserve, the French Biodiversity Agency (OFB) and the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), have developed a “LIFE Baie de l’Aiguillon” project, 60% of costs funded by the European Commission.
The five-year project envisages the restoration, conservation and improvement of these coastal areas of European interest and aims to make these actions permanent.
